How to Get Rid of a Fake “Antivirus”…?
Question by Tina R: How to Get Rid of a Fake “Antivirus”…?
Just yesterday I started to get these fake “Microsoft Spyguard Antivirus” alerts appearing on my task bar. I tried my AVG Antivirus Scan program, and these alerts are still there.
They keep popping up, especially when I’m connected to the Internet. No matter how many times I try to un-install, they keep coming back. How do I get rid of this? Help!

Before doing a scan with these programs turn off system restore. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. In the System Properties dialog box, click the System Restore tab.Click to select the Turn off System Restore check box. Or, click to select the Turn off System Restore on all drives check box.Click OK.Update and do a scan with these tools to get rid of any malware that is installed on your PC. Once the removal process is finished restart your computer and turn system restore back on. Run crap cleaner and delete temporary files.

try running Spybot Search & Destroy, which you can download from http://www.majorgeeks.com
try running avg in safe mode.. you can also try running trendmicro’s housecall (a free web based scanner, just google it) or you can also try download spybot search and destroy (also free) and running it in safe mode.. to get to safe mode just restart your computer and when it starts boot up just keep hitting f8 until you get an option to start with safe mode.. good luck! hope this helps
If you are trying to completely remove Microsoft Spyguard, there are detailed instructions here:
http://www.exterminate-it.com/malpedia/remove-spy-guard
Involves editing the registry.
Always backup your registry first, and take great care.
# Editing the registry can be very dangerous, and can cause permanent damage to your system!
# Write down the your changes and initial values. You may need to restore the registry as it was.
# Registry editing may not be possible in some Windows versions.

It is very likely a Smitfraud infection. Fake and phony ‘warnings’ to try and con you into purchasing a rogue software to ‘fix’ the problem.
It should actually be called extortion-ware. First they infect your computer and then they want money to ‘cure’ it.
All of these are specialised removal tools for this type of fake, rogue advertising of useless malware removal softwares. (Zlob/Smitfraud infections.).
Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (MBAM):
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
SmitfraudFix:

RogueFix:

I would try MBAM first, myself.
Almost all “general purpose”,”all-in one” spyware and virus removal programs such as AVG Anti-virus, Norton, McAfee or Spybot S & D cannot remove it, as you have already found out.
